Not car related. But here’s a car and a song. The song is totally related.
So, um...
As a 37-year-old dude who has a wide array of skills and interests, I still have no real idea what I want to do with my life.
Here’s what I know:
Office stuff. Lots of it
Cotomer Sevis
Call Centers
Automotive stuff (theory, not practical. I can do belts and hoses, basic disc brake jobs, and oil changes. Beyond that I’m not very useful. But I can identify almost any part by sight and can talk endlessly about automobilia)
Math
End-user computer stuff
Training (especially how to explain stuff in a way laypeople can understand)
Problem Solving and Critical Thinking - Too few people examine problems before throwing money or time at them. It’s important to understand things first.
Correspondence
Empathy - This is really becoming a lost art. I learned my morals from Fred Rogers, my mom, and my grandma.
Ethics - I stand for people doing the right thing, even if it’s against their employers
My values are those that can be described as left-leaning humanism. Respect everyone on their own terms, acknowledge that we’re working together, and be a part of the community. I don’t believe that religion in any sort is required to have morals and values. But many people need their faith and I respect that.
Too many people think that they’re doing the world a service by extracting as much as they can from it, and then monetizing everything. I’m the first to say that people like Rand and even Adam Smith are wrong when they assume that people serve by working only in self-interest.
My interests are varied, but I love music - especially punk rock and its variants. I like driving, cars, and driving cars. I think a lot and write a little bit.
I’ve done a lot of different jobs, but I’ve been in customer service for the majority of my working life. I wouldn’t say I’ve had a “career,” yet. Call centers are soul-wrenching hellholes but I did those jobs well - especially when I was training people. I’ve also been a bouncer, a chemical technician mixing rubber in a print shop, and delivered pizzas.
So I’m looking at where I could go with my skills. I’m not a sales guy. Due to my experience and lack of competitiveness for my own gain I don’t do well in that.
I do, however, stand up for others really well. I’m passionate about mental health issues, and developmental disabilities, and addiction and other issues. I find myself drawn to the fields of human resources and patient advocacy, but I don’t want empathy fatigue.
I just need to find direction. Right now I’ve got a decent but low paying gig that I love because I get to be around new cars all the time and do some interesting stylistic stuff. But that’s not permanent and once I finish my Bachelor’s degree I want to be in a position where I no longer have to ask for jobs, but will be sought out.
So once I have my school bills paid off, I’ll meet with a career counselor.
Thanks for reading.

Have you thought about teaching? What kind of Bachelor’s degree are you working on?

I have, actually, but the part of the US where I am is o penly hostile toward educators . Seriously - teachers are leaving the state in droves because they’re not making enough money to pay their student loan debt.
And I’m back to my general ed stuff right now. I was thinking education and business for corporate training, or perhaps a business/psychology for the patient advocacy route. But it’s still up in the air...
